Joanne Price is a Minnesota artist focused primarily on relief printmaking. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York. Joanne was introduced to wood engraving by Frank Eckmair while attending undergraduate school at the State University College at Buffalo. Traveling to Minnesota in 1999 for graduate school, she received her Masters degree in Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota in 2002. Price is currently the Exhibitions and Cooperative Artists Manager at Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis, MN.
With an ongoing interest in animals, Price often portrays our domesticated
companions, their barnyard relationships and whimsical natures. The artist commonly combines opposing ideologies like cuteness and innocence versus instinctual predation and violence exploring and exposing the hypocrisies that surround us. Price is also interested in the threats that common/domesticated animals pose to humans through domestic or foreign terrorism, food source issues and animal viruses with her series titled Animal Terrorists.
Currently, Joanne is illustrating the Palm Tree Story. The Palm Tree Story is a Columbian tale of a little boy on a quest to help three men who had set out to find their fortunes. Along the way the boy encounters continual resistance and rejection from the three men, but the boy endures as a helpful companion.
Price just recently received a Jerome Book Arts Fellowship grant through the Minnesota Center for Book Arts to fund the project. A pamphlet bound book and a deluxe portfolio edition of the Palm Tree Story will be available fall 2010.
